M4 Sherman - Allied Medium Tank (2018)

About the M4 Sherman:

Perhaps the best known Allied tank during World War II, the M4 Sherman was designed to replace the M3 Lee. Named for the eccentric Union General William T. Sherman, the Sherman medium tank was mass produced to help offset better-armed German tanks such as the Tiger and Panther. The American war machine produced over 50,000 Sherman tanks between 1941 and 1945.

The Sherman chassis was used for several dozen different variants. Among these variants, several were specialized for mine clearance, rocket battery, or as a self-propelled howitzer. The standard M4 Sherman was equipped with a Continental R975 gasoline-powered engine and could achieve a top speed of 21 miles per hour. Stock Sherman examples were armed with two machine guns and a 75mm cannon, the Sherman could handle all but the heaviest German tanks. Although they struggled against German armor, the Allies found success in overwhelming the slower German tanks by often deploying five or more Sherman tanks against the same target.

The Sherman was also deployed during the Korean War but was eventually replaced by the M46 Patton.

Specifications:

  • Engine: Continental R975 C1 radial petrol
  • Speed: 21 mph (34 km/h)
  • Range 120 mi (193 km)

Easy Eight - M4A3E8 Sherman Tank

About the Easy Eight – M4A3E8 Sherman Tank:

The name “Easy Eight” was the nickname for the final World War II production model of the famous Sherman tank. While never designed to battle heavy German armor, this model was more capable than the original Sherman tanks rolled out three years earlier. The Easy Eight contained key critical upgrades including a longer, high velocity 76mm gun and better armor. The nickname “Easy Eight” comes from the final two letters in its military designation, M4A3E8, which indicated an improved and heavier suspension system designed to deal with the extra weight of the new gun. This was effective at navigating the uneven terrain of the Ardennes Forest when in combat with intimidating German heavy tanks during the Battle of the Bulge.

The Easy Eight was the only Sherman to remain in American service following World War II, deployed in Korea until the development of the M46 Patton. The Easy Eight was also the basis of the famous Israeli “Super Shermans” which saw action well into the 1970s.

Specifications:

  • Crew: 5
  • Engine: Ford GAA 8-cylinder gasoline
  • Speed: 23 mph (37 km/h)
  • Range: 109 mi (175 km)

Armament: 76mm high-velocity gun, .50 caliber Browning M2, 2x .30-06 caliber machine guns

Features of the Easy Eight – M4A3E8 Sherman kit include:

The Brickmania team has updated our ever-popular Easy Eight kit with several new features. A perfect addition to this kit would be one or more WW2 US Tanker minifigures (sold separately). Leading the attack was the USS Johnston, who helped sink the Japanese heavy cruiser Kumano and then went toe-to-toe with the pride of the Japanese fleet, the 65,030-ton battleship Yamato and her escort of destroyers. Fighting until completely dead in the water, just 141 of the Johnston’s crew of 327 survived the engagement.

The recipient of six battle stars for service in World War II, the Johnston also received the Presidential Unit Citation, and her Commander, Ernest E. Evans, received the Medal of Honor. Forever cementing the Johnston’s legacy as one of the bravest ships in the history of the United States Navy.

Jagdpanther - Tank Destroyer

About the Jagdpanther – Tank Destroyer:

Seeing action in both the Western and Eastern Fronts, the Jagdpanther (“hunting panther”) was perhaps the most iconic tank destroyer of World War II. Matching its intimidating title was an equally impressive armament that included an 88mm Pak 43 as the main gun. Famously known for their action in July of 1944, three Jagdpanthers managed to disable 11 Churchill tanks in just two minutes of fighting near St. Martin de Bois in France. Although incredibly effective, far too few Jagdpanthers were produced far too late to make a significant impact on the outcome of the war.

Specifications:

  • Armor: 40-100 mm (1.57-3.94 in)
  • Main Armament: 88mm Pak 43
  • Speed: 46 km/h (29 mph)

A6M5 Zero - WWII Long-Range Fighter

About the A6M5 Zero – WWII Long-Range Fighter:

Perhaps one of the most successful fighter planes in history upon its release, the A6M5 Zero spent its first two years of production as the most feared fighter on the planet, racking up a kill ratio of 12 to 1. Tiger I Ausf E - German Heavy Tank

About the Tiger I Ausf E – German Heavy Tank:

When the Axis powers turned their forces against Russia, Panzer III’s and IV’s were met by massive numbers of the new Soviet T-34 medium tank. The Panzertruppen found themselves outgunned and facing defeat unless they could be equipped with more powerful weapons. A new 50-ton heavy tank was to be produced, armed with an adaptation of the deadly 88mm antiaircraft gun and 100mm of frontal armor. The winning prototype was designed by Henschel (referred to as the Panzerkampfwagen VI, Tiger I Ausf H) and was ordered into production in July of 1942. The name was later changed to Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf E, or Tiger E for short. The Tiger made its battlefield debut in September of 1942 and immediately proved effective at knocking out virtually any adversary within range.

Despite its 10:1 kill ratio against Allied tanks, the Tiger E could not stand up to the endless waves of T-34 and M4 Sherman tanks. The material cost of the Tiger program only allowed for roughly 1,800 to be produced when including all variants (Tiger B, Ferdinand/Elefant, Jagdtiger). Although few in number, several Tiger tank commanders were highly skilled in combat. Panzer Commander Michael Wittmann destroyed several hundred Allied tanks during the course of the war, earning him the title “Tiger Ace”. The Tiger E and its variants served the Panzertruppen on the European and African fronts until the end of the war.
