Messerschmitt Bf 109 - WWII Fighter Aircraft

About the Messerschmitt Bf 109 – WWII Fighter Aircraft:

If you were a Luftwaffe pilot, you were likely to hear the familiar drone of a Daimler-Benz engine on a daily basis. As the primary German fighter aircraft of World War II, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was one of the few to see action through the entire Second World War, due to its versatility and simple design. The G-6 model began production in 1943 and was the most widely produced of all the Messerschmitt variants.

LeFH 18/40 - 10.5cm Light Howitzer

About the LeFH 18/40 10.5cm Light Howitzer (Ambush Camo):

Born from the German Army’s need for a lighter, more transportable howitzer, the 10.5 cm LeFH 18/40 first saw action in 1942 and continued service until the end of the war in 1945. Featuring a double-baffled muzzle brake, the LeFH 18/40 barrel and gun mount connected to a two-wheeled trailer with a split trail leg recoil system that doubled as a tow leg while in transport. Crewed by four to six soldiers, the LeFH 18/40 was capable of firing six to eight rounds per minute, with an effective range of nearly 14,000 yards.

Easy Eight - M4A3E8 Sherman Tank

About the Easy Eight – M4A3E8 Sherman Tank:

The name “Easy Eight” was the nickname for the final World War II production model of the famous Sherman tank. While never designed to battle heavy German armor, this model was more capable than the original Sherman tanks rolled out three years earlier. The Easy Eight contained key critical upgrades including a longer, high velocity 76mm gun and better armor. The nickname “Easy Eight” comes from the final two letters in its military designation, M4A3E8, which indicated an improved and heavier suspension system designed to deal with the extra weight of the new gun. This was effective at navigating the uneven terrain of the Ardennes Forest when in combat with intimidating German heavy tanks during the Battle of the Bulge.

The Easy Eight was the only Sherman to remain in American service following World War II, deployed in Korea until the development of the M46 Patton. The Easy Eight was also the basis of the famous Israeli “Super Shermans” which saw action well into the 1970s.

Specifications:

  • Crew: 5
  • Engine: Ford GAA 8-cylinder gasoline
  • Speed: 23 mph (37 km/h)
  • Range: 109 mi (175 km)
  • Armament: 76mm high-velocity gun, .50 caliber Browning M2, 2x .30-06 caliber machine guns

M4 Sherman - Allied Medium Tank (2018)

About the M4 Sherman:

Perhaps the best known Allied tank during World War II, the M4 Sherman was designed to replace the M3 Lee. Named for the eccentric Union General William T. Sherman, the Sherman medium tank was mass produced to help offset better-armed German tanks such as the Tiger and Panther. The American war machine produced over 50,000 Sherman tanks between 1941 and 1945.

The Sherman chassis was used for several dozen different variants. Among these variants, several were specialized for mine clearance, rocket battery, or as a self-propelled howitzer. The standard M4 Sherman was equipped with a Continental R975 gasoline-powered engine and could achieve a top speed of 21 miles per hour. Stock Sherman examples were armed with two machine guns and a 75mm cannon, the Sherman could handle all but the heaviest German tanks. Although they struggled against German armor, the Allies found success in overwhelming the slower German tanks by often deploying five or more Sherman tanks against the same target.

The Sherman was also deployed during the Korean War but was eventually replaced by the M46 Patton.

Specifications:

  • Engine: Continental R975 C1 radial petrol
  • Speed: 21 mph (34 km/h)
  • Range 120 mi (193 km)
  • Crew: 5
  • Armament: 75mm main cannon, 2x 7.62mm machine guns

6 Pounder 57mm Anti-Tank Gun

About the 6 Pounder 57mm Anti-Tank Gun

First used in 1942 during the Battle of Gazala, the Ordnance Quick-Firing 6-pounder, or simply 6 Pounder, fired a 57mm projectile that exited the barrel at an impressive 2,700 feet per second and, against German armor such as the Panzer IV, had an effective range of just over 1,600 feet. Used primarily by US and British forces, the 6 pounder was an incredibly versatile anti-tank gun that outfitted a number of tanks and armored vehicles as well as functioning as a six-man artillery unit that could be towed across different terrain surfaces.

Panther - Panzerkampfwagen V Ausf D

About the Panther – Panzerkampfwagen V Ausf D:

After the beginning of Operation Barbarossa in 1941, as German Panzers streamed across the Soviet Union, they were slowed by the appearance of a Soviet tank, the new T-34. The Germans found the Panzer IV’s low-velocity 75mm gun lacking against the T-34. A mildly panicked German High Command ordered the development of a new tank to combat this threat: Enter the Panzerkampfwagen V, better known as the “Panther”.

The Panther was deployed as a medium tank on all German fronts from mid-1943 to the war’s end in 1945. The Panther is often categorized into three major variants: Ausf. A, D, and G. Small adjustments were made between variants, including improvements to the commander’s cupola and the addition of a hull machine gun. The Ausf. G variant (1944) saw a complete overhaul of the hull to provide the tank with better survivability.

While having essentially the same Maybach engine as the Tiger I, the Panther had more efficient frontal hull armor and better gun penetration. The trade-off was weaker side armor, which made it vulnerable to flanking fire. Despite being classified as a medium tank by the Germans, the Panther’s weight was comparable to that of the heaviest Allied tanks.

Considered one of the best tanks in WWII for its excellent firepower and protection, its reliability was less impressive. When the Panther first deployed at Kursk, many broke down and were abandoned by their crews. Among those recovered, the complex engineering made the Panther difficult and time consuming to repair. Much like many other German tanks, the Panther outperformed comparable Allied tanks in combat — when it was actually functioning. Its high velocity 75mm main cannon and excellent maneuverability had no trouble dealing with both the T-34 and M4 Sherman.

Over 6000 Panthers in all variants were produced during the war. Despite their excellent performance, the Panthers and their crews were simply overwhelmed by the sheer number of Allied tanks produced — roughly 50,000 of both the M4 Sherman and T-34. This numerical advantage coupled with the loss of experienced tank crews in 1944-45 contributed to the eventual fall of the Third Reich.

ISU-122 - Heavy Self-Propelled Gun

About the ISU-122 – Heavy Self-Propelled Gun:

Known as the younger brother of the ISU-152, the ISU-122 utilized the Soviet Union’s surplus of 122 mm guns and ISU hulls to create an effective and accurate heavy tank destroyer with over twice the rate of fire as the 152 variant. The ISU-122 also featured superior armor and protection when compared to previous Soviet self-propelled guns. After WWII many of the remaining ISU-122s were converted into civilian vehicles to aid in constructing the Soviet Union’s expanding railroad network.

8.8cm Flak 36 - Anti-Aircraft Anti-Tank Gun

About the 8.8 cm FlaK 36:

First created in 1934, the FlaK 18 or German 88 was developed in secret to avoid the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The improved FlaK 36 followed soon after and became a favorite among German Army personnel because of its ability to slice through armor as far as 1,800 meters away. Though mostly used for air defense, the FlaK 36 saw some action as an anti-tank weapon as well, although its size and weight made it difficult to transport across uneven or soft terrain.

Later in the war, the FlaK 36 was mounted on railway cars and vehicles and was even used as the main weapon in the heavily armored German Tiger Tank.

Additional Information:
Brickmania’s latest FlaK 36 kit features new ambush camo and a traversable gun that rotates a full 360° and elevates to 90°.
