M4 Sherman - Allied Medium Tank (2018)

About the M4 Sherman:

Perhaps the best known Allied tank during World War II, the M4 Sherman was designed to replace the M3 Lee. Named for the eccentric Union General William T. Sherman, the Sherman medium tank was mass produced to help offset better-armed German tanks such as the Tiger and Panther. The American war machine produced over 50,000 Sherman tanks between 1941 and 1945.

The Sherman chassis was used for several dozen different variants. Among these variants, several were specialized for mine clearance, rocket battery, or as a self-propelled howitzer. The standard M4 Sherman was equipped with a Continental R975 gasoline-powered engine and could achieve a top speed of 21 miles per hour. Stock Sherman examples were armed with two machine guns and a 75mm cannon, the Sherman could handle all but the heaviest German tanks. Although they struggled against German armor, the Allies found success in overwhelming the slower German tanks by often deploying five or more Sherman tanks against the same target.

The Sherman was also deployed during the Korean War but was eventually replaced by the M46 Patton.

  • Speed: 21 mph (34 km/h)

S-Tank - Stridsvagn 103 Main Battle Tank

About the S-Tank – Stridsvagn 103 Main Battle Tank:

Designed and manufactured in Sweden during the Cold War, the Stridsvagn 103 or S-Tank was the first tank of its kind to use a turbine engine, which led to its unique low profile design. The purpose of the design was for the S-Tank to act as a defensive weapon, fortifying itself and its crew in a well protected area and then using the tank’s suspension to adjust the position of the gun. The tank was armed with a fixed Bofors 105mm L/62 and featured no turret, leaving the elevation and rotation of the gun to the tank’s revolutionary suspension system which could reach an elevation/depression of 22 degrees, better than most Cold War era tanks. Adding to its versatility, the S-Tank was also completely amphibious and could “swim” after less than 30 minutes of preparation.

Specifications:

  • Weight: 42.5 tonnes (49 tons)
  • Crew: 3
  • Speed: 50 km/h (31 mph)
  • Range: 390 km (290 mi)

2 1/2 Ton Cargo Truck - Deuce and a Half

About the 2 1/2 Ton Cargo Truck – Deuce and a Half:

The 2 1/2 ton 6×6 Truck was the crucial piece of logistics hardware in the Allied arsenal during World War II. Examples include a long (164-inch) and short (145-inch) wheelbase. The short version was designed to tow 75mm and 105mm field artillery and the long version was typically used for personnel and cargo.

The famous “deuce and a half” saw service worldwide and was the main transport vehicle for the famous Red Ball Express. Operated from August through November 1944, the Express was developed to deliver the required supplies to rapidly advancing Allied divisions. The route was essentially a one-way loop using existing roads in France.

Because of unit segregation, over 75% of the soldiers operating the convoys were African-American. Many had never driven a truck before. Despite receiving only a few hours of training, these men ensured the success of this logistics miracle. Operating 24 hours a day, they drove day and night on narrow roads through bad weather to deliver badly-needed supplies to the men at the front. It is estimated that over 900 trucks were moving on the Express at any given time. Around 5,400 trucks were involved in the operation, delivering over 400,000 tons.

By the end of production in 1945, 562,750 in all variants had been built.

Specifications:

  • Crew: 2
  • Speed: 45 mph (governed)
  • Engine: GMC 270 gasoline
  • Range: 200–300 miles

2cm Flakvierling 38 - Anti-Aircraft Cannon

About the 2cm Flakvierling 38 – Anti-Aircraft Cannon:

The Flakvierling 38 was a quadruple-mounted 20mm FlaK 38 developed to address the original gun’s slow rate of fire against fast moving aircraft during World War II. Using two foot pedals, a seated gunner could fire from two or four barrels in semi-automatic or fully-automatic modes. Used on a wide variety of vehicles, such as the Opel Blitz or even on top of submarines, the Flakvierling 38 firing at maximum speed could achieve a fire rate of up to 1,400 rounds per minute. However, seeing as each barrel used its own ammunition box with a total of 20 rounds per barrel, the rate of fire was reduced to 800 rounds per minute and required the ammunition box on each of the four guns to be changed every six seconds, making it just barely effective enough to remain in use through the end of World War II.

Specifications:

  • Caliber: 20 mm
  • Maximum range: 2,200 m (2,406 yards)
  • Rate of fire: 800 rounds/min
  • Weight: 450 kg (992 lbs)
  • Total length: 4.08 m (13 ft)

Additional information about this Brickmania® custom building kit:

Including seats for a crew of three along with a rotating and elevating four barrel mount, the Flakvierling 38 features brick-built ambush camo and adjustable custom printed bullseye sight. The model’s armor and base can also be removed making it possible to custom mount the model on a vehicle such as the Opel Blitz.

Panther - Panzerkampfwagen V Ausf D

About the Panther – Panzerkampfwagen V Ausf D:

After the beginning of Operation Barbarossa in 1941, as German Panzers streamed across the Soviet Union, they were slowed by the appearance of a Soviet tank, the new T-34. The Germans found the Panzer IV’s low-velocity 75mm gun lacking against the T-34. A mildly panicked German High Command ordered the development of a new tank to combat this threat: Enter the Panzerkampfwagen V, better known as the “Panther”.

The Panther was deployed as a medium tank on all German fronts from mid-1943 to the war’s end in 1945. The Panther is often categorized into three major variants: Ausf. A, D, and G. Small adjustments were made between variants, including improvements to the commander’s cupola and the addition of a hull machine gun. The Ausf. G variant (1944) saw a complete overhaul of the hull to provide the tank with better survivability.

While having essentially the same Maybach engine as the Tiger I, the Panther had more efficient frontal hull armor and better gun penetration. The trade-off was weaker side armor, which made it vulnerable to flanking fire. Despite being classified as a medium tank by the Germans, the Panther’s weight was comparable to that of the heaviest Allied tanks.

Considered one of the best tanks in WWII for its excellent firepower and protection, its reliability was less impressive. When the Panther first deployed at Kursk, many broke down and were abandoned by their crews. Among those recovered, the complex engineering made the Panther difficult and time consuming to repair. Much like many other German tanks, the Panther outperformed comparable Allied tanks in combat — when it was actually functioning. Its high velocity 75mm main cannon and excellent maneuverability had no trouble dealing with both the T-34 and M4 Sherman.

Over 6000 Panthers in all variants were produced during the war. Despite their excellent performance, the Panthers and their crews were simply overwhelmed by the sheer number of Allied tanks produced — roughly 50,000 of both the M4 Sherman and T-34. This numerical advantage coupled with the loss of experienced tank crews in 1944-45 contributed to the eventual fall of the Third Reich.

Specifications:

  • Weight: 44 tons
  • Crew: 5
  • Front armor: 80mm
  • Main armament: 1 x 7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70

SdKfz 251 Ausf D - German Half Track Three-In-One Kit

About the SdKfz 251 Ausf D – German Half Track Three-In-One kit:

SdKfz 251/1: First produced in early 1943, the SdKfz 251/1 Ausf D was the standard half track armored personnel carrier for the German Army in World War II. Equipped with dual MG42s, over 10,000 of the Ausf D models were built from 1943 to 1945 and were often used to tow the 10.5 cm LeFH 18 light howitzer, along with other field artillery.

SdKfz 251/9: Nicknamed the “Stummel”, which is German for stump, the SdKfz 251/9 Ausf D variant featured a 7.5 cm howitzer mounted on the roof, along with a coaxial MG42.

SdKfz 251/10: The command variant of the 251 Ausf D featured a 3.7 cm Pak 36 anti-tank gun for added artillery support. During initial production, the 251/10 mounted the entire top half of a Pak 36 gun shield on the roof, but this was later changed to better conceal the 251/10’s added firepower.

WWII 82nd US Airborne

Brickmania’s September 2019 Minifigure of the Month!

About the 82nd Airborne minifigure:

The U.S. Army’s first airborne division, The 82nd Airborne first began airborne training in October of 1942. In early 1943 the 82nd became the first airborne division to be sent overseas, landing in North Africa on May 10th. From there the 82nd played a critical role in countless operations including the invasion of Sicily, D-Day, Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge, and finally the occupation of Berlin.

This Brickmania® custom minifigure features artwork based on the uniforms of the 82nd. The uniform color has been slightly shifted from dark tan to a more accurate olive green and includes field-applied camo, ammo bandolier, and pistol holster, combat knife, updated camo helmet netting, and camo face paint.

Brickmania® custom minifigures include detailed historical artwork based on the uniforms and equipment used at that time. All artwork is designed and professionally printed at the Brickmania HQ in Minneapolis, MN.
